Altitude sickness during the trip

Altitude sickness, also known as acute mountain sickness (AMS), is a significant concern during the luxury Everest Base Camp trek with heli return due to the high altitudes reached on this journey. As you ascend to heights of up to 5,364 meters (17,598 feet), the reduced oxygen levels can affect trekkers. Here are some key points to consider regarding altitude sickness:

Symptoms:

  • Common symptoms include headaches
  • dizziness
  • nausea
  • fatigue
  • shortness of breath
  • difficulty sleeping.

Prevention:

  • Rise up slowly to avoid exerting excessive pressure on your body muscles as they are under the process of familiarization with the new environment.
  • You should, therefore, ensure that you are well-hydrated by taking a lot of fluids.
  • Alcohol and smoking should be kept at a minimum or eliminated since they would make the symptoms worse.
  • Suggested for the success of the diet is to eat a balanced diet to help one avoid feeling sleepy and drowsy all the time.
  • Acclimatization: Work into your trekking plan one or two ‘acclimatization days’ during which the body may adjust to altitude. It is during such rest days that one can cover ground at a leisurely pace, which is very useful in acclimatization.
  • Monitoring: Take time to check your personal health condition and report any sign that you have altitude sickness to your guide. The symptoms in the early stages of the disease are often modest and nonspecific; thus, the timely diagnosis and treatment are critical.
  • Emergency Plan: Be specific on an outright treatment for serious cases of altitude sickness, which might call for being pulled down by winch, helicopter, or any other means of pulling people down from the mountain.

With the above preventive measures and understanding the danger signals of the altitude sickness, your trekking experience can be a lot safer and more comfortable.
